The Republic of Albania is a country in South-Eastern Europe. In 2005 the office of the National Coordinator for the Fight against Trafficking in Human Beings responsible for coordinating all anti-trafficking activities in Albania was set up and a national referral mechanism was established.
In the period 2006-2009 Albania established a Transnational Referral Mechanism in the framework of the Programme to Support the Development of Transnational Referral Mechanisms for Trafficked Persons in South-Eastern Europe funded by USAID and implemented by ICMPD. In 2013 a new national anti-trafficking coordinator was appointed and a special taskforce to improve coordination among police, prosecutors, and judges was created. In May 2013 the Albanian Government approved the new Crosscutting Strategy on the fight against Organised Crime, Illegal trafficking and Terrorism, 2013 – 2020. One of the priorities of the strategy is the fight against Trafficking in Human Beings. The main objective in this area is to enhance the investigation, trial and conviction of traffickers and protection of trafficked persons.
